Abdullah Abdullah, front-runner in Afghanistan’s presidential election, escaped assassination on Friday when two bombs blew up outside a hotel where he had just staged a rally, killing six people.The midday blasts, one caused by a suicide bomber, destroyed a car in Abdullah’s convoy, police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai said. One of the dead was a bodyguard. Twenty-two people were injured.Television images showed the charred remains of the car alongside shattered shop fronts in a densely populated western district of Kabul.”When I was leaving the rally from the People’s Islamic Unity Party, our car was hit by a roadside bomb and destroyed,” Abdullah said at another rally soon afterwards.

Suspected Islamist militants dressed as soldiers rounded up and killed at least 42 villagers in Nigeria’s northeast, the centre of an escalating insurgency increasingly targeting civilians, a police source said.The assault in Bardari late on Wednesday came a day after officials and witnesses said raiders killed scores of people in three other villages in the Borno region, where Boko Haram insurgents first launched their campaign to carve out an Islamist state.The gunmen in military uniform called the Bardari villagers together, then opened fire, the police source told Reuters. “The people couldn’t identify them in time as terrorists.”The militants then fled, crossing a river and setting fire to houses in the neighbouring village of Kayamla, close to the regional capital Maiduguri, added the source.

A roadside bomb explosion in Afghanistan’s eastern Ghazni Province has killed four police officers who were trying to defuse the bomb, according to officials.The four, including a local police, were killed in Waghiz district on Thursday as they attempted to defuse one of two roadside bombs planted in the eastern district.“They defused the first bomb and while they were trying to defuse the second one nearby, it detonated and killed them,” provincial spokesperson Shafiq Nang said.Deputy police chief of Ghazni Assadullah Safi also confirmed the incident, saying another police officer was wounded in the attack and taken to a nearby hospital.No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Authorities in China’s restive Xinjiang region sentenced nine people to death on Thursday for “violent terrorism” crimes, state media reported, as part of a nation-wide crackdown on separatist militants.China has launched a year-long “anti-terrorism” operation, and hundreds of suspects have already been detained.A total of 81 people from Xinjiang, home to a large Muslim Uighur minority, were handed sentences for crimes related to involvement in “terrorist organizations” to intentional homicide and arson, state broadcaster CCTV said on a microblog.”Among those, nine people were sentenced to death, and three people were given death sentences with a two-year reprieve,” CCTV said, the latter referring to a sentence that is often commuted to life in prison.

A drone strike killed at least three suspected al Qaeda militants in Yemen on Wednesday night, tribal sources said.The strike targeted a vehicle in which the suspected militants were travelling in the Wadi Abida district of the central Maarib province, east of the capital Sanaa, the sources told Reuters.Yemen is the main stronghold of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the Islamist militant group’s most active wings. The United States acknowledges using drones in Yemen but does not comment publicly on the practice.

At least four Pakistani soldiers have been killed and four others wounded in cross-border attacks from the Afghan side of the border.The attacks took place on Wednesday on Pakistani checkpoints in the Manozangal and Mukha Tops areas of the Bajaur tribal region.”Terrorists from across the border fired on Pakistani border posts at Manozangal and Mukha Tops,” a Pakistani security official said.Following the incident, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry released a statement condemning the attacks.The Pakistani ministry said that it had raised the matter with the Afghan government and its embassy in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, adding, “Afghanistan must take concrete steps to stop the use of its territory against Pakistan.”

At least 21 people have been killed and dozens injured in a series of attacks across Iraq, security and hospital officials say.Kirkuk Provincial Health chief Sabah Mohammed said that eight people lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries after two vehicles rigged with explosives detonated in the northern Iraqi city on Wednesday.Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, militants are often blamed for such attacks in the oil-rich province of Kirkuk.Meanwhile, in the capital Bagdad, a car bomb killed four people in a shopping area, while separate attacks in different districts left two others dead.On Baghdad’s northern outskirts, a roadside bomb also killed two policemen.
