Beijing rebukes ‘biased’ Pentagon report on China’s military

Standard

China is increasing military spending, particularly through “unprecedented” modernization of air force, the Pentagon said in a report. Beijing rebuked the document as “preposterous criticisms of China’s normal defense and military building.”Beijing’s military spending last year exceeded $145 billion, assessed the US Department of Defense on Thursday in its annual report to the Congress. The estimate is more than 20 percent higher than the official Chinese figure.“China has the fiscal strength and political will to support defense spending growth at comparable levels for the foreseeable future,” the report said. “Continued increases will support People’s Liberation Army (PLA) modernization efforts and facilitate China’s move toward a more professional force.”

China takes more assertive line in South Sudan diplomacy

Standard

China is swapping its reserved diplomacy for a hands-on approach to help resolve a more than five-month-old rebellion in South Sudan that threatens Beijing’s oil investments. The subtle change has been evident in months of faltering peace talks in the Ethiopian capital, where Chinese officials have been in regular contact with Western diplomats to help regional African mediators push for a halt to fighting.Diplomats say the permanent Chinese presence at the Addis Ababa talks and their frequent lobby chats and closed-door consultations with diplomats from the United States, Britain and Norway – the main Western backers of newly independent South Sudan – shows China’s more proactive approach. When a first ceasefire deal was reached on Jan. 23, a month after fighting erupted, a senior Western diplomat said China’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Xie Xiaoyan, joined other envoys by giving a speech at the signing that set the tone for Beijing’s involvement.

China lodges protest with U.S. over Tiananmen remarks

Standard

China has lodged a diplomatic protest over U.S. remarks on the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, issuing a sterner rejection of Washington’s call for it to account for those killed in pro-democracy protests.Tens of thousands of people held a candlelight vigil in Hong Kong on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the crackdown, while mainland China authorities sought to whitewash the 1989 event. The White House had honored those who gave their lives in the action to crush the protests and said in a statement that it would always speak out in support of the fundamental rights that the protesters sought.Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China was “strongly dissatisfied” and “firmly opposed” to the U.S. statement, the official Xinhua news agency said in an English-language report late on Wednesday, adding that it had “lodged solemn representations” with Washington.

British PM David Cameron’s country home has been ‘fracked’ by environmental activists in protest against the exploitation of shale gas. The protest comes as the Queen announces changes to trespassing laws that will pave the way for fracking across the UK.Environmental activists have sent a powerful message to the British Prime Minister over plans to exploit reserves of shale gas in the UK through a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Greenpeace activists gathered at Cameron’s country home in the Cotswolds and gave him a taste of what mass fracking might bring to Britain. The ‘frackivists’ blocked the entrance to the house, erecting metal fences and suspending a sign that read “We apologise for any inconvenience we may cause while we frack under your home.”
