Russia and China are eyeing a number of joint high-tech projects, ranging from creation of a new long-range passenger plane to joining forces on a satellite navigation system to compete with American GPS and European Galileo. The range of prospects was outlined on Friday by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who met Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Yang in Siberian Novosibirsk. Rogozin said Russia would develop cooperation with BRICS members in defiance of any possible Western sanctions.“Our technological partnership should be directed at the countries that are close to us in mentality and which in general constitute an emerging geopolitical force that we could rely on in opposing the monopolar world. Those are BRICS countries first and foremost,” he said.BRICS are an informal group of developing economies comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, with a combined economic and political power allowing them to defend their interests in a world dominated by US-led Western countries.

The crew of a UK submarine had a close brush with death when an air-conditioning failure caused temperatures to soar, it has emerged. Catastrophe was averted after the submarine dived down 200 meters into cooler waters. It has been revealed HMS Turbulent was hit by a potentially disastrous situation while on patrol in the Indian Ocean three years ago. The vessel’s air conditioning system became clogged, causing temperatures to rocket to 60C (140F). “I genuinely thought there was going to be a loss of life on board,” commanding officer Ryan Ramsey told the Plymouth Herald, describing how crewmembers were collapsing everywhere, many still at their work stations. “It was absolutely terrifying, and I’m not afraid to say I was scared. I remember looking at a picture of my family quickly thinking, ‘We need to pull through this.’”

The state-run British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is to slash up to 600 jobs within the next two years as part of its latest phase of cost-saving programs.According to a report published by Forbes magazine on Tuesday, the BBC plans to announce between 475 and 500 job cuts at its news section and an additional 75 to 85 at its UK radio services. The layoffs will result in about 6 percent of the corporation’s news force exiting over the coming two years. The job cuts form part of the BBC’s so-called Delivering Quality First (DQF) cuts program, which aims to save around £800million per year by 2016.James Harding, the BBC’s director of news and current affairs, had already warned that the corporation is only half way through its cost-cutting drive, which was launched in 2011.

Slovakia joined neighbor the Czech Republic on Wednesday in effectively ruling out hosting NATO units, when Prime Minister Robert Fico said he could not imagine there would be foreign soldiers on its territory.Fico spoke a day after U.S. President Barack Obama promised to beef up military support for eastern European members of the NATO alliance who fear they could be next in the firing line following Russia’s intervention in Ukraine. The White House also said it would review permanent troop deployments in Europe in light of the Ukraine crisis, though that fell short of a firm commitment to put troops on the ground that Poland and some of its neighbors – but not the Czechs or Slovaks – had sought.Slovakia, a NATO and European Union member since 2004, has kept warm relations with Russia throughout the crisis under Fico, whose Smer party has an absolute majority in parliament.

British PM David Cameron’s country home has been ‘fracked’ by environmental activists in protest against the exploitation of shale gas. The protest comes as the Queen announces changes to trespassing laws that will pave the way for fracking across the UK.Environmental activists have sent a powerful message to the British Prime Minister over plans to exploit reserves of shale gas in the UK through a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Greenpeace activists gathered at Cameron’s country home in the Cotswolds and gave him a taste of what mass fracking might bring to Britain. The ‘frackivists’ blocked the entrance to the house, erecting metal fences and suspending a sign that read “We apologise for any inconvenience we may cause while we frack under your home.”

A new review by British scientists has given the green light to creating babies from three people. They said the techniques used were not unsafe. The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) said Tuesday that after examining a large amount of data, it has concluded that nothing suggests at the moment that the techniques used were“unsafe” and added it could be “potentially useful for a specific and defined group of patients.”But it added that further experiments were needed. The announcement follows two reviews in 2011 and 2013, which reached similar conclusions. The techniques used in three parent IVF babies are highly controversial as they involve creating babies from three people – two mothers and one father, which critics say could lead to the phenomenon of“designer children.”
