Spain’s opposition leader to step down after EU election slide

Spain’s Socialist opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said on Monday the party would select a new chief in July after its worst-ever election result in European elections on Sunday.”It’s clear that we haven’t regained voters’ confidence,” Rubalcaba told reporters at a news conference, saying: “There has to be new leadership that takes on change.”The Socialists, which lost nine of their 23 seats in the European Parliament as other leftist parties gained force, will hold an extraordinary meeting to choose a new leader on July 19 and 20, Rubalcaba said.
