Russia cozies up to China to fortify presence in Far East

With the situation in Ukraine becoming increasingly unfavorable, Russia is turning its focus to China to fortify its position against the United States and Japan, reports Duowei News, an outlet run by overseas Chinese.As the crisis in Ukraine stretches into a 10th week — after Russia invaded the Crimean peninsula in February in response to civil unrest that resulted in the ousting of Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovych — a desperate Russia is doing its best to cozy up to China in its “second battlefield,” the Far East, Duowei says.Last month, Russian president Vladimir Putin spoke of Russia and China as “natural neighbors and therefore natural partners” ahead of a visit to Beijing on May 20, which will coincide with joint naval drills between the two countries. The drills will be conducted in the East China Sea, where China continues to be embroiled in a testy territorial dispute with Japan over the Diaoyutai (Diaoyu to China, Senkaku to Japan) islands.
